How to Fix a Broken Key Fob: A Step-by-Step Guide

Getting Started
Before we jump into the instructions, there’s one important thing to note. If the piece of your key fob has broken off and fallen out, you must have it back inside the fob or close to the ring of the ignition for your car to start. Keep this in mind as you follow along.
Step 1: Get a Replacement
First things first, you’ll need to get a replacement key fob. You can find them on Amazon for around twelve dollars, and it will be shipped straight to your house.
Step 2: Remove the Screw
Flip the fob over and remove the screw that’s holding it together.
Step 3: Slide the Side Upwards
Slide the side of the fob that doesn’t have the buttons upwards, and you’ll see the inside of the fob.
Step 4: Take the Piece Out
Take the piece out of your old fob that you need for the new one. You’ll know which one it is because it will have a button to push, and a red light will come on.
Step 5: Check the Battery
You must replace the battery if the red light doesn’t come on. To do so, remove the two screws on the back of the fob and pop off the cover. You’ll see the battery, which is a CR1616. Pop the old battery out with a screwdriver, and replace it with a new one.

Put the cover back on and ensure the rubber gasket is in place. The cover can go on either way, so don’t worry about which way you put it on.
Step 7: Put the Fob Back Together
Line up the holes on the side of the fob put the cap on, and slide it downwards. Finally, put the screw back in to secure the fob.
Step 8: Get Your Key Recut
The last step is to take your old key and the new fob to a locksmith to recut the key. There’s no need for any reprogramming.
